The third annual FlexSimposium in Poland (FlexSimposium PL) was held on November 24, 2015, at the University of Economics in Katowice. The event brings together scientists, engineers of manufacturing and logistics systems, and students interested in simulation technology. It’s also one of three FlexSim-focused conferences that is regularly held worldwide, and the only one that is academic in nature.

Some highlights from FlexSimposium PL:

  • Dr. Witold Cempel from the University of Science and Technology in Kraków gave a speech about the relationships between simulation and Lean/Six Sigma. He pointed out that in practice changes are seldom tested before being implemented even though computer simulation enables such testing.
  • Dr. Allen Greenwood noted that while product testing is common in the industry sector, process testing still remains a rare practice. He suggested that the use of simulation technology in Poland is bound to improve companies’ competitiveness.
  • Dirk-Jan Moens from the Netherlands presented FloWorks, a new bulk, fluids & gas logistic simulator, to show the transition between discrete and continuous processes. He showed the application of the software in the petrochemical and brewing industries.
  • Dr. Paweł Pawlewski from the Poznań University of Technology outlined the application of an agent-based approach in logistics.
  • Dawid Dąbal, representing the University of Science and Technology in Kraków, discussed manufacturing process testing, providing examples from selected companies in the automotive industry.

Two workshops, one for beginners and one for advanced users, attracted a large number of participants and provided a hands-on experience with simulation modeling through FlexSim. Through modern simulation software like FlexSim, individuals have access to a library of objects to build three-dimensional models of manufacturing and logistics processes. These models can be used to perform simulation experiments aimed at minimizing costs, maximizing productivity, and much more. In Poland, FlexSim is already used by companies such as Fiat, Beiersdorf, Team Technik and Solaris.
